History

Organic Food Markets have a successful history going back over nearly two decades on two continents.

In 1992 Elizabeth Taylor opened England's first Organic market in Spitalfields in the City of London. Spitalfields was the old disused Victorian wholesale grocery market for London. (Similar to the original use of the site at Paddys, Haymarket in Sydney.) The building was disused pending development but the introduction of the market proved the catalyst for the revival of the entire area which is now one of the more fashionable parts of London to visit and enjoy. The historic building was saved from demolition!

A second market was opened in Manchester before Elizabeth moved to Australia. It is reported that there are now some 400 farmers/food markets across the UK emulating the original concept.

In 1995, the first market was opened in Sydney, at Frenchs Forest. It has become the undisputed venue for the retail purchase of Organic produce in Sydney. It is a hard standing venue, in the car park of a local hotel every Sunday Morning.

In 2001 a second market was opened in Leichhardt bringing Organic food and farmers directly into the heart of Sydney.

Markets are now also operating in Hornsby, St Ives, Kings Cross, Chatswood, Marrickville and Bondi Junction Mall. Every venue requires its own type of market. Organic Food Markets has the skill to create the right market for any environment.

Spitalfields was an old Victorian building which lent itself to standard metal frames stalls. Frenchs Forest is a bare car park where everything has to set up and removed in some 6 hours. Leichhardt is a green fields site and required a country atmosphere. Hornsby is a smart city centre and requires matching canvas kiosks laid out with symmetry, high quality produce, regular and consistent supply of gourmet quality food. Organic Food Markets, with a wealth of experience in this sector will be able to source the right stall-holders. Organic Food Markets have proved their ability to work with the owners of venues, be they local authorities, schools or the private sector.

Organic Food Markets is the event organizer of choice for many Councils to implement the revitalization of public areas acting both as consultants, for example to the Redfern-Waterloo Authority, and as operators, for example with City of Sydney.  Please contact us for more information.
